Here Mayes shares easy-to-follow preparations of her favorite soul-food recipes along with personal stories and memories about why she included each of the dishes, categorized under breakfast, snacks; soups, salads, and sandwiches; sides; mains; desserts; and drinks. With an approachable style, the book kicks off with lists of pantry staples and essential appliances, before the 100 photo-illustrated soul-food recipes that embrace both Mayes' family heritage in Louisiana and Jamaica and her home in the Pacific Northwest: shrimp and crab omelettes, sweet-potato biscuits, a pimento-cheese and fried-green-tomato sandwich, a lasagna made with pork and creole seasoning, and a peach cobbler topped with flaky piecrust, to name just a handful of the mouthwatering options on offer.
