In this anthology, editors Gilbert (emerita, English, Univ. of California, Davis) and Porter (English, Reed Coll.) bring together diverse food writing, including poetry, biblical dietary restrictions, an excerpt from Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, and comments on "food porn." The 96 pieces are predominately from 20th-century American authors (e.g., Julia Child, M.F.K. Fisher, Ruth Reichl, Ernest Hemingway, David Foster Wallace), though a variety of other time periods and countries are represented as well. The tone of the selections ranges from lighthearted and rib tickling to unsettling (those concerned with animal cruelty or cannibalism). Each selection has an introduction from the editors, providing background on the author and context to the writing. Some poems are only a few lines long, while other entries are between three and six pages, such as passages from Herman Melville's Moby-Dick and Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. VERDICT This diverse anthology will be a solid fit for readers with interests in cookbooks, food blogs, chef-centered TV shows, and foodie culture in general.--Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley Sch., Fort Worth, TX
