Whitney Miller's New Southern Table

Since winning the first season of MasterChef, Miller has traveled the globe. In her follow-up to Modern Hospitality, she updates favorite family recipes to incorporate ideas gleaned from her travels. Her tweaks are as simple as using olive oil instead of vegetable oil to make biscuits and as radical as working turnip greens and andouille sausage into a Chinese hot pot recipe. Chapters for breakfasts, snacks, soups, sides, suppers, and other courses contain a wide selection of fresh, family-friendly recipes that aren't excessively rich, including campfire s'mores scones, Mississippi Reuben (topped with coleslaw instead of sauerkraut), and crawfish-pimento mac 'n' cheese. VERDICT Unfussy, versatile, and filled with stories, this volume is great for everyday family cooking and casual entertaining. It will appeal more to Food Network and cooking show fans than traditionalists and epicures.
