Food writer Bonne (San Francisco Chronicle's wine section) sets out to create a guide to California's smaller and independent wineries. When he moved from the East Coast to Seattle, he first discovered the joys of West Coast wine. Then while working in California, Bonne began to move beyond the mainstream California wineries, which he felt were tied to a more industrialized approach to winemaking. This manual is the result of his discoveries within the less conventional wineries. Bonne includes a history of the "new wine" movement and a tour of winemaking country in California, as well as information on the products that emerged from this movement. Using the winemakers themselves to tell the story, he effectively showcases how the movement relies upon a more holistic attitude to its craft. VERDICT American wine buffs, especially those who enjoy California wine, will find this an engaging book in a niche between John Kiger's very specific Vineyard Odyssey: The Organic Flight To Save Wine from the Ravages of Nature and DK Publishing's broader 1000 Great Everyday Wines.--Ginny Wolter, Toledo-Lucas Cty.
