Oktoberfest is known worldwide, but most readers will likely be unaware of all that the event involves. German comedian and satirist Wolff offers insight in this comprehensive, well-organized guide, touching on what beers and food are offered in which tents, whether a venue is family friendly, what other amusements and carnival rides are available, and general etiquette when attending. The abundant detail is sure to come in handy for travelers, not just self-avowed beer lovers. Unfortunately, the writing works against this rich content. Whether the translation from German is at fault or the jokes simply aren't funny (and they are occasionally sexist--is a man with a whip really the "Alpine embodiment of every woman's dreams"?), the reader may cringe at many of the passages. Wolff is more palatable when he sticks to the facts about Oktoberfest. Crude illustrations also detract from the overall appeal. VERDICT Informative, offbeat, but not as humorous as intended. Recommended with caution for travel guide collections.--Peter Hepburn, Coll. of the Canyons Lib., Santa Clarita, CA
