This entry in Quarry's new series designed to profile artisanal crafts from the viewpoints of experts in the field boasts a highly qualified author, nationally acclaimed East Coast winemaker Miller. Though the possibility of planting a vineyard or owning a winery may be out of reach for most readers, this guide serves as a comprehensive examination of the trade and will delight even the most stoic oenophiles. Miller begins with selecting a vineyard site and ends with laboratory analysis of the perfect bottle. Each chapter contains substantive interviews with well-known authorities, such as winegrower Gary Pisoni and winemaker Pauline Vauthier, that elevate this book above Thomas Pellechia's The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting and Running a Winery. VERDICT The overall layout is artful and posh, making Miller's book also excellent for the coffee table. This high-quality guide will appeal to those with an interest in wine growing and wine making, culinary enthusiasts, and gardeners.--Carolyn M. Schwartz, Westfield State Univ. Lib., MA
