For a culinary style so deeply and thoroughly rooted in tradition, a new kosher cuisine sounds improbable. But Kushner aims to revivify ordinary dishes with novel flavors. She varies the classic combination of tomato soup and grilled-cheese sandwiches by topping the soup with cheese croutons. Lemon sharpens very lightly curried lentil soup. Moroccan cuisine gets a nod in a chili- and preserved-lemon-topped preparation of fish fillets. Dessert items earn plenty of attention. Rose petals scent chocolate-pistachio-walnut bark. Kids (and adults) surely will adore Kushner's little chocolate-enrobed peanut-butter cups. One thing that doesn't change much is the kosher predilection for sweetness in so many savory dishes: honey or sugar seems an inevitable addition in lots of Kushner's recipes. Rather than labeling the recipes as meat, dairy, or pareve, Kushner leaves it up to the cook to classify. Color photographs make Kushner's recipes even more attractive.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
