Traditional recipes--including chilled cucumber soup with smoked trout, pork sausages with sauerkraut, and Bavarian potato salad--fill this colorful introduction to the history, cuisine, and culture of Bavarian biergartens. There are recipes for appetizers, pickles, meats, and salads to enjoy outdoors with a beer, as well as baked, fried, and frozen fruit desserts. These recipes are suitable for novice home cooks, who will need a kitchen scale--many ingredient measurements are only given in grams and ounces. VERDICT This cheery collection provides a digestible overview of biergartens and can add variety to summer and outdoor entertaining collections.
