Writing with Bull (coauthor, The Everything Vegan Cookbook), Ong, former head chef at California's organic, vegan, macrobiotic restaurant Manzanita, introduces macrobiotics basics, how food affects moods, and the connection between food and nature. Their Buckwheat Pancakes include buckwheat flour, spelt flour, and vegan milk; Passion Beet Borscht is a creamy version of the classic; and Mediterranean Brown Rice Salad calls for brown rice, black olives, carrots, lettuce, and pine nuts. The book also features weekly menu plans and resources (recommended books and stores for macrobiotic supplies). This simple, understandable introduction to the macrobiotic lifestyle is highly recommended.
