Scaled-down recipes are a must for singles and couples who loathe leftovers. In her follow-up to Dessert for Two, Lane shows how favorite comfort foods--even tricky ones such as croissants, Thanksgiving turkey, and homemade marshmallows--can be made in small batches. Her numerous brunch dishes are perfectly portioned (none requires half an egg), and her lunches, dinners, and desserts (e.g., cheesy spring risotto, tuna noodle casserole, pumpkin spice tiramisu) are a cinch to prepare. Home cooks won't require special equipment for most of these recipes, but they'll need six-inch pans (springform and regular) for the cakes. VERDICT A winning addition to books about cooking for two. Pair this with America's Test Kitchen's The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook or Carla Snyder's One Pan, Two Plates.
