Sullivan (First Meals and More) takes readers through the creative process of baking and assembling beautiful kids' birthday cakes. Each recipe indicates how much time is required for prepping, baking, and decorating plus how many servings are yielded. Besides ingredients, each entry includes a list of any specialized equipment required, such as pastry brush, fondant smoother, or cake drum. Featured themes include: In the Jungle, Soccer Mania, Happy Robot, and Prima Ballerina. The cupcake caterpillar consists of different colored cupcakes linked together with icing. Frosting and leveling strategies are discussed. Many recipes could present a challenge (e.g., constructing the princess castle or making animals for the circus big top out of fondant), but simpler cake pops and cupcakes are also highlighted.
