This second vegan cookbook by Horn and Mayer (after VBQ: The Ultimate Vegan Barbecue Cookbook) gives readers an array of innovative options for a flavorful first meal. The recipes are both sweet (poppy seed pancakes and berry chai jam) and savory (a traditional English breakfast spread with homemade bread and sausages, made with chickpea flower and wheat gluten). On-the-go recipes include Swedish bagels with cream cheese, dill, and tender beets, and potato-stuffed parathas with peas and nigella seeds. For brunch entertaining, there are suggestions for hash brown BLTs, poached pears, and an aromatic pesto bread for the center of the table. For those who like to indulge in morning sweets, the authors suggest a raw chocolate tartlet and glazed baked donuts. Horn and Mayer also discuss the basics of coffee, tea, and the importance of a well-balanced morning routine. In order to get a positive start to the day and a good breakfast on the table, the authors encourage setting earlier alarm times, preparing food the night before, and starting the day with a tall glass of water. Horn and Mayer make vegan breakfast fun and satisfying to cook, eat, and share.

Horn and Mayer, coauthors of The Ultimate Vegan Barbeque, apply their approach to breakfast, and in doing so, have taken on the meal most easily skipped for the sake of extra sleep and beginning the morning commute. The authors design a plan to value the morning and savor a well-made but not necessarily time-consuming meal. Beyond smoothies, there are grain and bread recipes with sweet and savory spreads, the requisite tofu scramble, and a "Full English Breakfast," with beans, tomatoes, and vegan sausage and bacon. Recipes include neither calorie count nor nutrients, since the authors believe this information is in flux. Instead, meals are identified as gluten, sugar and/or soy free. Tips for make ahead and go-with recipes are featured at the bottom of the page. VERDICT In this follow-up to their popular first book, Horn and Mayer give ample reasons to make breakfast the meal that starts the day.--Jeanette McVeigh, formerly Univ. of the Sciences, Philadelphia
