Like Megan Gordon's Whole Grain Mornings, this cookbook from Asbell (Sweet and Easy Vegan) makes it easy to start using buckwheat, quinoa, millet, and other whole grains in tasty everyday meals. After an introduction that includes a handy grain cooking chart and glossary of grains and flours, Asbell provides recipes for breakfasts, baked goods, soups, salads, sides, mains, snacks, and desserts. Dishes such as smoky bacon and grain frittata, crunchy-crumb chicken fingers with honey mustard, and cherry cheesecake bars with extra graham crunch call for readily available ingredients and are never severely healthy. Most are vegetarian, and the few that are not can usually be made so. VERDICT An excellent choice for readers looking for a practical take on whole grain cooking that doesn't read like a diet book.
