From the authors of the Nourishing Meals blog, this second edition cookbook has a new subtitle and updates themes in the original work. Nutritionists Segersten and Malterre (coauthors, The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook) promote a whole foods diet, providing advice and solid rationales for raising children on a regimen free of both environmental and nutritional toxins. As in their previous books, emphasis is on ingredients that are nonallergy-causing and protective or enhancing of internal and external health as supported by scientific evidence. Few cookbooks include a list of scholarly citations, but newcomers should not be intimidated by the hard data. Recipes are enjoyable on their own and include nutrition and ingredient tips, advice on cooking techniques, and recipe variations. "Allergen keys" above every dish indicate what allergy group is excluded. All recipes are gluten free and, true to a whole foods diet, some include meat. VERDICT While this is a solid addition to a whole foods collection, there is not enough new material here to warrant purchasing where the earlier volume is available.--Jeanette McVeigh, Univ. of the Sciences, Philadelphia
