An unpleasant experience with faux turkey inspired food writer O'Donnel's (The Meat Lover's Meatless Cookbook) attempts to develop a "feast without the beast" that would satisfy carnivores, vegetarians, and eaters with other dietary restrictions. Here, she offers 26 seasonal menus that include some striking dishes like a molded, risotto-stuffed Eggplant Timpano and Roasted Red Onions with Pumpkin-Rosemary Bread Stuffing. Recipes are grouped by season, but they're not consistently ordered by course or by menu. Because some recipes are repeated across menus, browsing can be challenging. VERDICT A beginner-friendly addition to the meatless-holiday genre, but readers willing to construct their own menus would be better served by other vegetarian titles.
