Brown's guide to eating on a limited budget, which evolved from a free PDF that went viral, seeks to help people living on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called food stamps) to plan satisfying meals. After providing economical shopping tips (e.g., buy in bulk, don't buy drinks), she shares recipes for everyday meals, snacks, pantry staples, drinks, and desserts. Brown estimates the cost per serving for all dishes, including potato leek pizzas, dark and spicy chili, and peanut chicken and broccoli with coconut rice. Readers will need to stock their pantries to achieve maximum savings, as it isn't possible to purchase some ingredients in the budgeted quantities. VERDICT Realistic photos and price approximations set Brown's straightforward and practical cookbook apart from similar titles such as Beth Moncel's Budget Bytes and Jessica Fisher's Good Cheap Eats. Many recipes are given in small serving sizes, so larger households will need to scale up.
