Research scientists and father-daughter writing team B. Brett Finlay (microbiology, Univ. of British Columbia; Let Them Eat Dirt; founder of multiple biopharmaceutical and microbiome-related companies) and Jessica M. Finlay (geographical & environmental gerontology, Univ. of Michigan) seek to educate and support readers in understanding the role of the human microbiome in aging as well as lifelong well-being. Chapters address the function of microbes in various conditions and body systems, with health strategies and lifestyle tips intended to be widely applicable to adults of all ages. Tips cover diet and nutrition, skin and dental care, beauty, hygiene and housekeeping, exercise, and sleep, among other topics, with highlighted sidebars addressing common health myths. The authors' tone is conversational and straightforward, and their expertise is demonstrated through detailed overviews of relevant research, analyses of health recommendations, and frequent excerpts from interviews with other scientists and academicians. Selected references are available for each chapter and readers are encouraged to contact libraries for help accessing articles. VERDICT Recommended for readers seeking scientifically accurate consumer health information on the microbiome's relationship to adult health and aging.--Monica Howell, Northwestern Health Sciences Univ. Lib., Bloomington, MN
