Medical doctors Lewis and Ali (author of books about diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's, and arthritis) deliver a hefty overview of the history, causes, symptoms, and treatment of pain. It is, as they note, the key reason why people look for medical help. In the preface, they wisely note that they present some concepts at an advanced reading level. Be forewarned. Fortunately, they provide a glossary at the end, along with such helpful resources as names and addresses of nationally recognized clinics. As for their advice, much of it seems quite basic: exercise, reduce stress, eat a well-balanced diet. And they conclude by writing, The most effective step is consulting a doctor, since it is always better to be assured than to take unnecessary risks. Still, the millions of Americans who suffer from acute pain (less than six months) or chronic pain (more than six months) and the doctors, friends, and family who look out for them will find much good information here.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
