The authors intend to show parents the sanguinity of having a child with attention deficit disorder (ADD), calling it a gift. Their upbeat message brings hope to the affected. Since Hallowell writes in the first person, narrator William Hughes speaks as the psychiatrist. Hughes's sandpaper voice and sophistication with medical terms are fully credible. Surely imagining the voice to be a doctor handing out valuable advice increases one's desire to pay attention. Since Hughes portrays everyone in the same voice, the sources of the words and opinions sometimes become obfuscated. Hallowell values love above chemicals in ADD treatment, a view he justifies by revealing that he has the gift, too. All the services, books, and products recommended along the way, such as online psychometric tests, would qualify as advertisements. J.A.H. (c) AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
