Medicine has, for the most part, ignored the differences between men and women when dealing with anything that is not sex-related. This has led to ineffective treatment in many cases. Glezerman (president, International Soc. for Gender Medicine; director, Research Ctr. of Gender Medicine, Rabin Medical Ctr., Israel) is working to change this. He points out that for example, women have very different symptoms of heart disease and are more resistant to infectious disease than men but more prone to autoimmune disorders. Aspirin is more effective for stroke prevention in women, yet better for heart disease prevention in men. Physician-patient communication dynamics, a vital part of medical treatment, varies among male and female patients and providers. Originally published in Hebrew and now available in this updated English-language version, Glezerman's book brings current research in this important area of medicine to both lay and professional readers. He even discusses the theory that men are an endangered species because the Y chromosome is deteriorating. This fascinating work will teach readers a great deal about sex, gender, and the human body. VERDICT A must-read for health-care practitioners and anyone interested in medicine.--Barbara Bibel, formerly with Oakland P.L.
