Physician Agus (The End of Illness, 2011) believes it is a fortunate time to be alive. Research and technological advances are providing people with longer, higher-quality lives. Biological boundaries are being extended. It's a medical manifest destiny. He writes about aging, genetics, sedentariness, and precision (personalized) medicine. Fascinating scientific morselsincluding parabiosis (anatomically connecting two living creatures) and CRISPR (a tool for editing the genome)abound. Agus recommends a daily aspirin and statin drug, envisions the smartphone as both a health diary and a virtual personal therapist, and even suggests that individuals consider banking their plasma. He expresses concern about misinformation, admits that medical studies are often wrong (biased and flawed), and lashes out at antiaging hoaxes (administration of testosterone or human growth hormone). He advises against routine consumption of Vitamin D and fish-oil supplements. Agus advocates a scientific and Zen-like approach to wellness that emphasizes listening to your body's signals, measuring and tracking important numbers (blood pressure, activity, weight, sleep), trusting your intuition, and keeping active. For the human body, (physiologic) balance is bliss.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
