Journalist and writer Fotheringham (The Independent; The Eagle of Toledo) presents a thorough and clearly written biography of Spanish bicycle racer Luis Ocana (1945-94), who gained fame as the perpetually unlucky but stubbornly determined rival to great Belgian cycling champion Eddy Merckx. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Ocana and Merckx dueled repeatedly in cycling's major races, creating a strong, ongoing rivalry that fascinated fans. While the usually unbeatable Merckx often triumphed over the underdog Ocana, the Spaniard's pure talent, impetuous nature, and absolute refusal to give up endeared him to the many fanatic followers of legendary races such as the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. Fotheringham, an experienced and knowledgeable cycling writer, ably depicts the few highs and many terrible lows of Ocana's sporting career, while also providing a balanced view of Ocana's background, personal life, and distinctive personality. VERDICT Although the large number of race recaps occasionally becomes tedious, the author successfully illuminates the strange, cruel, and magnetic world of top-level cycling, where brutal twists of fate are commonplace, suffering is legion, and triumph is, for most riders, a rare and costly commodity. Best suited to dedicated cycling fans interested in Ocana, Merckx, and the history of cycling in the 1970s.--Ingrid Levin, Salve Regina Univ. Lib., Newport, RI
