Williams, executed in 2005 after serving 24 years in San Quentin for murder linked to gang activity, traces his development from L.A. gang leader to world-renowned antigang activist. Cofounder of the notorious Crips, Williams recounts the social dynamics that led the Crips from protection against street violence to perpetration of violence, drug dealing, and other criminal activity. Williams is unsparing in his recollections of gang life and drive-by shootings in the first part of this book. In the second part, he chronicles his evolving consciousness of the conditions that produce antisocial behavior and that eventually provoked Williams to speak out against gang violence, write books, and promote a national peace protocol. Williams was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times and the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. His memoir, with an epilogue by longtime coauthor Barbara Becnel, imparts a penetrating look at personal redemption as Williams offers himself as an object lesson for urban youth.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2007, American Library Association.)
