Batchelor (public relations, Sch. of Mass Communications, Univ. of South Florida) is an award-winning writer, historian, and expert on American popular culture. In this enjoyable read, he collects stories, essays, and papers inspired by the songs of legendary country and gospel star Johnny Cash (19322003) and demonstrates his influence on culture and society. Cash has been a force on the American musical scene for half a century. Interest in him and his music has enjoyed a resurgence, especially following the release of the biographical movie "Walk the Line". These writings by a wide array of authors (e.g., Lauren Baratz-Logsted, Don Cusic, Gretchen Moran Laskas) include both fiction pieces and researched papers. From an investigation of Cash's iconography to a filmographic essay, they were unlikely to have appeared together in any other source, making this a convenient and interesting book for Cash enthusiasts. Recommended for all public and academic libraries as well as for special music collections.Mark Alan Williams, Library of Congress
