Lombardi has worked in NFL personnel for more than 30 years, with several under Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh, Hall of Fame owner Al Davis, and five-time Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Belichick. Having worked closely with such football masterminds, Lombardi learned about what's involved in achieving sustained success. Here he discusses the shared characteristics of championship teams: how they're built and organized and how they approach each game and maintain excellence in a competitive environment. Similar to an expert book on business management, this volume illustrates brilliantly, with riveting anecdotes, how these men handled every type of situation, whether in practice, in a game, or in the front office. Author Lombardi (not related to legendary coach Vince Lombardi) is an NFL lifer who was as an assistant to Bill Walsh, the head coach of the Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers of the 1980s. Fans will immerse themselves in this revealing insider's glimpse into pro football. Lombardi, who also worked for the Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns and, most recently, was an assistant coach for Bill Belichick's New England Patriots, compares and contrasts the styles of the men he's worked for, warts and all. Walsh was obsessively detailed, but Al Davis of the Raiders worked from the gut. Lombardi is generally respectful of his coaching counterparts, but if he has a bias, it's against meddling by know-nothing owners who bought an NFL team and declared themselves football experts. His comments on the skills required of NFL head coaches are particularly revealing: x's and o's, sure, but also practical concerns like setting clear guidelines for discipline, making room arrangements on the road, even planning meals and diets.
