Pipas (medicine, Dartmouth Coll.) draws on her patient care and scientific research to offer a dozen practices that foster mental and physical well-being. The first section focuses on awareness, the second on self-care. An early chapter on mindfulness and the importance of self-assesssment seems an oversimplification of a complex process. The next section presents scientific literature that illustrates the significance of relationships, finding things that feed one's spirit, and the importance of connecting with nature. Pipas vividly illustrates her points with at times moving accounts of patients or students who helped her see the value of self-awareness and self-care. While this book tries to straddle a delicate line between addressing health professsionals and being relevant to general readers, since so many examples are taken from medical field, it seems more directed at physicians. VERDICT A scientifically grounded, affectionately written work primarily aimed at medical professionals and trainees. Still, laypersons will find useful insights and tools to enhance well-being within its pages.--Aaron Klink, Duke Univ., Durham, NC
