February 2013. The Miss Ally, a 12-meter fishing boat with a crew of five, was looking for halibut off the coast of Nova Scotia. The young captain knew a hurricane was approaching, but he and his crew decidedunlike other crews, who were already making for shoreto stay out for another day. That decision cost them their lives. Author Casey takes a straightforward approach to attempting to answer the lingering question about the tragedy: Why did the crew of the Miss Ally elect to stay out there? To approach an answer, Casey interviews family and friends of the crew members, attempting to understand who these five young men were and to determine just how much their youth and poor judgment contributed to what happened. He explores the aftermath of the incident, too, reconstructing the rescue operation in detail. This effectively written, dramatic examination of a tragedy that most observers would probably say didn't need to happen will be of most interest to Canadian readers, but it will also draw an audience from anyone fascinated by sea disasters.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
