Al Muderis (Walking Free), a surgeon specializing in osseointegration, a procedure that attaches robotic limbs to amputees, here, with writer Weaver, recounts his journey back to his native Iraq, which he fled almost two decades earlier. He relates his childhood, his professional successes in Iraq, the threats he encountered under the Saddam Hussein regime that ultimately forced him to abandon his homeland, and his treacherous journey to find refuge. Eventually settling in Australia, where he perfected his surgical skills and shared his gifts with those most in need, Al Muderis describes the difficult decision to return and reconnect with the country he once called home. VERDICT An engaging account of a man who accepts life-altering challenges as opportunities to improve himself and the lives of others, this should prove an enjoyable read for anyone interested in immigration memoirs or medical tales.--Susan E.
