New York University professors Klinenberg (sociology; Palaces for the People), Caitlin Zaloom (social & cultural analysis; Out of the Pits), and Sharon Marcus (English & comparative literature; The Drama of Celebrity) present a collection of essays about the U.S. authoritarian shift following the election of President Donald Trump. With an introduction by Klinenberg, the 30-plus essays by academic sociologists and other experts each address a specific field of policy (energy, criminal justice, immigration) or politics (evangelical voters, protest, the presidency). The book is divided into three parts--current events, historical context, and movements rejecting the antidemocratic trend--although individual writings may span these domains. The writing style is accessible to general audiences. Most but not all of the essays refer to further reading sources through endnotes or references to authors' recent books. VERDICT Recommended for readers seeking a critique of the Trump administration from multiple progressive liberal perspectives based on public policy themes rather than celebrity scandals or legal challenges.--Jennifer M. Miller, Univ. of Southern California, Los Angeles
