This detailed narrative looks back at the 1968 New York Jets team that shocked the world by beating the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. In the straightforward narrative, Lederer, a market researcher and lifelong Jets fan, quickly recounts the season and big game before pulling back to highlight the players, coaches, and executives who made the Jets victory possible. In doing so, he turns the focus away from Joe Namath, the flashy, celebrity quarterback who promised fans a Jets victory before the game was played. The result is an anecdote-heavy but at times disjointed account of the team. Lederer tells of linebacker Al Atkinson playing the second half of the Super Bowl with a separated shoulder and of offensive tackle Winston Hill playing with a broken neck. Lederer also lists the many players who developed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), or dementia due to head injuries. Most excitingly, Lederer weaves in the exclusive access he got to coach Weeb Ewbank’s playbooks, including personal player evaluations (running back Matt Snell “was not performing as well as his previous rookie season”) and the game plan for Superbowl III (Ewbank “knew that a short passing game and a strong running attack were essential to upending Baltimore”). Football fans will enjoy this comprehensive glimpse into one of the game’s great teams. Agent: Dawn Michelle Hardy, Serendipity Literary Agency.

When quarterback Joe Namath publicly guaranteed that the American Football League's (AFL) 18-point underdog New York Jets would defeat the National Football League's Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III and then made it come true in January 1969, it was a defining moment in pro football. Fifty years later, that game remains among the most significant in league history and has inspired this new look at the team who pulled off the upset. Lederer introduces the AFL championship game and the Super Bowl and examines the impact of the game; however, the bulk of the book consists of profiles of the team's 45 players and five coaches, based on both interviews with the men and their families and commentary from the late head coach Wilbur Charles "Weeb" Ewbank. Each profile provides insightful recollections of the season, the game, their teammates and coaches, as well as a summary of their subsequent lives and careers. VERDICT This unique look at Namath and the Jets should find a wide audience.

A longtime fan of the New York Jets debuts with a meticulous analysis of the Jets' personnel who, on Jan. 12, 1969, defeated the highly favored Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.Lederer doesn't ignore the actual game--he has an early chapter about it and a nine-page play-by-play account in the backmatter, and he and various Jets from the era rehearse key moments--but his focus remains on the team. With a true fan's passion (that day, according to the author bio, "was the most exciting sports day in his life"), he employs scores of interviews and other necessary research to tell the stories of those who brought about the victory. Not wishing to write yet another tribute to Jets' star quarterback Joe Namath, Lederer devotes several pages to each individual involved, dividing his chapters into traditional team divisions--coaches, offensive line, defensive line, etc. Although there are names that will resonate with many general sports fans--e.g., Namath, Weeb Ewbank, Don Maynard, Matt Snell--there are many others whom the author rescues from the virtual anonymity that awaits a nonheadliner upon retirement. We learn how each player or coach got to the Jets, what head coach Ewbank thought of them (he kept notes), how they performed in the AFL championship game and the Super Bowl, and what happened to them afterward. More than a few are no longer living, and some died from brain deterioration now recognized as a dire side effect of a career spent in football. Lederer doesn't conceal the injury situation; neither does he condemn it at length. The text is a little too littered with clichés ("kept his eye on the prize," "blowing his own horn"), and though he alludes about a dozen times to the "Heidi game," he leaves its explanation to a writer of one of the forewords.A fan's notes, meticulous and proudly partisan, for Jets fans and devotees of the early NFL.
