Listeners have the opportunity to hear this fine compilation of interviews with extraordinary individuals conducted by various NPR personalities through the years. Each interview is given background in an introduction by the NPR interviewer who conducted it, but the interviewees ultimately speak for themselves, sharing their unique and absorbing stories. Those featured include renowned animal behaviorist Temple Grandin, a Bosnian teenager living through the siege of Sarajevo, and the gifted young pianist Emily Bear, among others. The inspiring, heartfelt, and enlightening interviews bring the listener into the daily lives and experiences of some fascinating individuals from diverse backgrounds. S.E.G. Just as individual notes combine to form symphonies, the individuals interviewed in this compilation by NPR newscasters each contribute a unique note to the human composition. The first tear-jerking story provides details behind the country song "I Drive Your Truck," about an army dad who drives his son's truck after his son's death in Afghanistan. The story both sobers the listener and shows the aftermath of human sacrifice. The collection quickly moves on to the inspiring story of autistic scientist Temple Grandin, who inspires all to embrace their perceived weaknesses as strengths. Interview participants such as Betsy Wilson, whose facial disfigurement helps her educate children and the public, teach. They also force listeners to consider what they would do if in the speaker's position, such as in the case of best-selling author Terry Pratchett, who faces the loss of his brain function from Alzheimer's disease. Politicians, survivors, savants, prodigies, and everyday people form an opus in their own voices that create a sense of nostalgia listeners will be certain to enjoy. VERDICT A laudable experience that opens up new and refreshing possibilities in the audio world.--Erin E. Forson, Columbus, OH
