This guide brings sewists into the world of New York City's Mood Designer Fabrics, while simultaneously providing an overview of fabrics used in garment sewing. A brief introduction provides a history of Mood, which was founded in the early 1990s by Jack Sauma, a Syrian immigrant with a background in fashion design. With the debut of Project Runway, an iconic fashion destination was born. The majority of the guide focuses on different types of fabrics, organized by fiber content (e.g., cotton, wool, silk). Each fabric's write-up includes descriptions, photographs, and tips for working with the fabric, and fashion photographs showing the fabrics in use (including many designs by Project Runway alums) are featured throughout. Sidebars feature profiles and tips from Mood's in-house experts. Tim Gunn provides the foreword. VERDICT A pleasingly presented layperson's introduction to the world of fashion fabrics. The name recognition will be a big draw.
