Chains are an integral part of many jewelry constructions and can also function by themselves as jewelry pieces. Dickerson, an editor for three jewelry magazines (e.g., "Creative Jewelry"), presents projects by several designers using ready-made chain with other jewelry elements that are suitable for beginners. Readers looking for more advanced instructions for chains that stand alone as jewelry should consider Chantal Saunders's "Creative Silver Chains".

Jewelry design is an increasingly popular craft, and working with chain can be a fast and affordable process if you know the basics. Dickerson takes the time to discuss the wide variety of hammers, pliers, and other tools crafters need to be familiar with (along with which are absolutely necessary) as well as demonstrating the basic techniques involved in making and designing with chainthat is, how to make various connecting loops and rings. The projects included are stunning, although the directions could use a bit more step-by-step illustration. The difficulty levels range from simple, easy-to-put-together designs that newcomers can feel comfortable getting their feet wet with, to more complex projects that experienced jewelry makers can tackle as stated or customize to their hearts content.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
