Much brain research has been done in the ten years since the authors' The Memory Prescription was published, and while some of the basics of improving one's memory (focus, giving information personal meaning to make it memorable, creating "memory places" to avoid misplacing everyday items, using visual stories that link together to-do list items, and other strategies) remain basically the same, there is growing evidence that shows the efficacy of these techniques as well as the effects of stress, nutrition, physical fitness, social networks, and medications and supplements on memory and the brain. Small, director of the University of California Los Angeles Longevity Center, and his frequent coauthor Vorgan have ably incorporated this research into this new book, making their easy-to-follow two-week program, as well as their other suggestions and observations, more evidence-based than before. VERDICT We are all aging, and people as young as 20 already report recall problems, thus memory strength is a concern for many adults. This absorbing and instructive book will be helpful to a wide array of readers.--Marcia G. Welsh, Dartmouth Coll. Lib., Hanover, NH
