Physician Smith (Shred) presents a two-week nutrient-rich cleanse designed to promote general health. Smith explains that clean food (containing antioxidants and fiber), water, and exercise (a “cleansing accelerator”) are key, adding that sleep is also essential. He goes on to describe the properties of 11 power ingredients (chia seeds, flaxseed, blueberries, strawberries, bee pollen, hemp seed, rolled oats, Swiss chard, kale, ginger, and spinach) included in many of the smoothie recipes in the latter part of the book. The Shred program, Smith asserts, will help readers lose weight and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The book offers detailed menus and exercise options for each day, including mealtime schedules, snack suggestions, and alternative choices (e.g., participants can substitute roasted vegetables for salad). The author also serves up a bonus weekend-cleanse chapter for those interested in a quick reset without repeating the entire program (though he emphasizes that in order to work, this program must be followed “to the letter”). Smith provides more than 50 smoothie and shake recipes, including his “signature” Purple Power Detox Smoothie. Though some text blocks are unnecessarily repeated throughout the book, fitness enthusiasts will appreciate this clear-cut and user-friendly program.
