Endless interest in Ernest Shackleton has resulted in numerous books considering everything from his epic display of leadership in the Endurance voyage to his work with Robert Falcon Scott. But the Ross Sea Partythe small group of men sent out to set up food caches for Shackleton during the Endurance disaster and who had no knowledge of the tragedy unfolding across the continent until their own rescueis often overlooked. The Lost Men (2006), Kelly Tyler-Lewis' masterful study of the group, is an exception and a must-read, but McOrist offers the definitive analysis of the party's individual diaries. The first to have access to these private books, McOrist weaves excerpts into the narrative that provide deep insights into not only the mission but also the men, especially those who did not survive. This is brutal and harrowing history, the sort that dims the glow of romanticism in service to the truth. All polar enthusiasts will be impressed anew by not only what the Ross Sea Party endured but also how hard McOrist has worked to share their words with the world.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
