10 Granny Squares 30 Blankets

Hubert (The Granny Square Book) specializes in granny squares--square crocheted motifs that can be combined into diverse designs, most commonly blankets. In her latest collection, Hubert presents ten granny-square patterns, followed by three blanket patterns showing the versatility of the motif. Variations in the blankets include color changes that give the designs a different feel, changes to the way the squares are seamed or finished, and scale. The result is a cornucopia of blankets that range in style, from modern to retro to subdued--and crocheters can further modify by choosing yarns in a different color palette. The directions for each square are written and charted, and full layout diagrams are provided for the blankets. The patterns are also divided by skill level, giving crocheters an idea of how challenging each pattern might be. VERDICT Hubert is one of the crocheters responsible for rescuing granny squares from the 1970s nostalgia heap, and here she continues her quest to modernize this tried-and-true favorite.
