London School of Economics graduate Butler-Bowdon takes on one of today's most polarizing topics in this seventh "50 Classics" series title, which previously offered his essay analyses of landmark texts in philosophy, prosperity, psychology, self-help, spirituality, and success. His "necessarily subjective" selections are arranged alphabetically by author, from Acton to Zakaria and include expected war horses (Winston Churchill's The Gathering Storm) and more offbeat choices (Naomi Klein's Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies), with some usual suspects (e.g., Plato's Republic) bypassed since they were featured in his earlier collections (Crito is included instead.) The result is a rather refreshing tour of political thought unmoored by traditional chronological organization. VERDICT A strange-bedfellows compendium, best suited to browsing.
