Fisher (Sew Fun) takes a streamlined approach to quilting in this volume of patterns created especially for giving as gifts or donating to charity. The focus is on quilts that are easy to piece and quick to make. Designs feature traditional-style repeated blocks in a set layout, large-scale blocks on a coordinating background, and long strips pieced together across the length of the quilt. The quilts skew toward the modern style, with lots of bright, bold color; crisply defined geometric shapes; and abundant negative space. The cutting charts included with each pattern are designed for efficiency, and tips for cutting and sewing are included as part of the instructions, as is an assembly diagram. Suggestions for time-saving techniques, such as chain piecing, efficient cutting, and using corner triangles as a simple way to add visual interest to a quilt are provided. Also helpful: the instructions for hand-tying quilts, which can be a quick yet sturdy alternative to hand or machine quilting. VERDICT Modern quilters looking for vibrant designs that can be easily pieced and customized, as well as charity quilters looking for something new, will enjoy Fisher's collection.
