Caligiuri tells his story, from a solid family foundation to his current life behind bars, with an open honesty about the choices he made while traveling that path. He was the only child of two loving parents who gave him attention, provided a safe home, and believed he had a successful future ahead, including the possibility of attending college. But even as a young boy, Caligiuri found himself behaving in ways that got him into trouble, with or without the influence of his peers. As he grew older, his childish escapades developed into serious situations that diminished his chances for a decent future, from drug use to deadly violence. Although he grew up in Minneapolis during the 1990s' unprecedented crime surge, and he describes what could have been undiagnosed depression, Caligiuri does not attempt to excuse or justify his behavior. Winner of several PEN Prison Writing Contests, Caligiuri demonstrates a willingness and ability to look back and share his experiences without judgment or ego, which makes for a fascinating and moving account of one man's incarceration and life.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
