Recent literature in bioethics, specifically narrative medicine, stresses the importance of understanding patients' experience of illness in the context of their entire world. The editors of this outstanding collection of essays comprise a mix of creative writing and medical professors who present the perspectives of patients, medical professionals, and families of patients. But without a particular field of focus, this volume is less beneficial to clinicians within a certain speciality. The writings are of uniformly high quality; each is well crafted and many are gut-wrenchingly honest and moving. While there's a lack of economic diversity in the book--all of the authors are well educated and therefore able to have an experience of the medical system allowed by that education and social status--it's still a useful compilation. VERDICT Those seeking a fuller picture of what it's like living with disease or disability, as well as educators looking for teachable essays for a medical humanities class or writing group, will find this work outstanding.--Aaron Klink, Duke Univ., Durham, NC
