Marrs (English, Univ. of Georgia; Nineteenth-Century American Literature and the Long Civil War) enters the crowded field of Civil War studies with this important assessment of the war from the standpoint of its continuing contributions to the American imagination. Marrs describes how authors and artists as varied as Walt Whitman, Abraham Lincoln, Abram Ryan, Margaret Mitchell, D.W. Griffith, Frederick Douglass, and W.E.B. DuBois gave account of the war's impact on American society, policies, and thought, arguing that these interpretations and reinterpretations at various points in history by different groups of people suggest the effects of the 155-year-old conflict are never far from our collective human experience. VERDICT Marrs weaves a complex history to capture the essence of the literature and art surrounding the Civil War, resulting in a valuable work beneficial to a variety of collections.--Ed Goedeken, Iowa State Univ. Lib., Ames
