Schnur's collection of autobiographical reflections about parenthood range from deeply poignant to downright schmaltzy. In spite of what the publisher may claim, the 31 loosely woven pieces do not bear much resemblance to the humorous family commentary of Dave Barry or Bill Cosby. While some of the anecdotes may elicit a chuckle or two, for the most part they lack that special punch which sets writers like Barry apart from the ranks of other mundane contemporary humorists. Though sometimes engaging, the stories tend more toward sanguinity amidst bittersweet reality. The result is a sentimental work in which Schnur pours forth large shares of emotions, confessions, and affirmations about his family life. Inspiration rather than humor should be the criterion in its selection.--Joseph Accardi, Univ. of Wisconsin Lib., LaCrosse
