Love by the Glass

Authors of the Wall Street Journal's "Tastings" column about wine, husband and wife John Brecher and Dorothy J. Gaiter have also teamed up to write their memoir, Love by the Glass: Tasting Notes from a Marriage. Gaiter, who's black, and Brecher who's white, grew up in segregated Florida towns and met at the Miami Herald. With warmth and humor, they recall their courtship and wedding, the arrival of children and their long careers as journalists. All the important life passages, from a new job at Newsweek to the birth of their daughter, are marked by memorable bottles, and the couple describes how they went from enthusiasts to collectors to critics.

Nothing more solidifies a marriage than mutually shared passion. In this case, the couple's shared passion is wine. The husband-and-wife team of Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher has become famous in both food and business circles through their weekly wine column in the" Wall Street Journal. "There they offer readers sound advice on the best current wines in all price ranges. Now they depart from their customary exclusive focus on wine and instead talk about their marriage. As budding reporters, the professionally focused couple met at the "Miami Herald" early in their careers and fell in love virtually at first sight. Considering their different backgrounds, he an urban Jew, she an African American from Alabama, it's a wonder they ever found common ground. But both were determined journalists, and they both discovered in themselves uncommonly acute palates for wines of all varieties. In their funny, touching memoirs, they link specific wine memories to formative events in their lives: job changes, romance, and children.
