In a comprehensive update to this popular title, Evans and Margaret Zarnosky Saponaro (coauthors, Collection Management Basics) collaborate with Holland Christie (public services manager, Flagstaff City-Coconino Cty. P.L.) and Carol Sinwell (dean emeritus, Northern Virginia Community Coll.) to investigate topics that are of increasing importance to libraries: e-resources, ethical issues, library as place, etc. This volume is not as much a "how-to" book as it is a treatise on the changing position and value of libraries, with practical information forming the backbone of each chapter. For example, "Reference Services," explores traditional and innovative ideas about the evolving reference desk and includes sidebars on such topics as experimental reference programs and links to supplementary material. However, the text reads like a set of best practices and could certainly be used as a handbook for public service desk supervisors. VERDICT This new edition will command a valuable place on any library professionals' bookshelf, starting with library school students up to seasoned administrators. Included "Closing Thoughts" and lengthy bibliographies in each chapter keep the conversation about the value of libraries going long after one has closed the book's covers.--Jennifer A. Townes, Atlanta Univ. Ctr. Lib.
