In this exhilarating and appealing memoir, venomologist Fry (biological sciences, Univ. of Queensland, Australia) recounts his passion for studying venomous snakes. He describes his international journeys of discovering four new species of venomous octopuses in Antarctica, experiencing a scorpion sting in the Amazon jungle, and catching venomous water shrews in Siberia. Fry has been bitten by snakes, broken 23 bones and learned how to walk again, and been attacked by three stingrays, among other dangerous adventures. Included are black-and-white photographs of him and the venomous creatures in the outdoors, at conferences, and in the laboratory. The author skillfully combines the personal and professional, sharing stories of his family, friends, colleagues, and anyone he meets during his expeditions. Prior science knowledge is not necessary, as the book is written for the general public and Fry explains scientific terms. VERDICT For anyone interested in learning more about the topic.--Tina Chan, MIT Libs., Cambridge
