In this latest entry of the "Cities of the Imagination" series (which has previously covered Athens, London, and Prague), Kent, author of several works on Scandinavian art and architecture, thoroughly examines Finnish history through the lens of the capital city. Unlike many European cities that grew organically over time, Helsinki was largely conceived and constructed by the architect Carl Ludvig Engel in the mid-19th century. While its industry and population have rapidly expanded, the city continues to provide natural beauty and wilderness along with urban life. Kent explores all these aspects of Helsinki and more, from its art, literature, and military history to its sports to its ethnicity, religion, and natural resources; the complex influence of Russia on Helsinki and the changes resulting from the collapse of the Soviet Union are also explored. This inexpensive book is recommended for academic and public libraries and will be useful for both travelers seeking in-depth history and students needing information on Finland.-Melissa Stearns, Franklin Pierce Coll.
