After more than a decade working in the Republican Party, openly gay conservative activist LaSalvia could no longer reconcile himself to the policies and politics of the GOP. He bailed out of the GOP and went independent, joining a growing number of Americans disappointed in both parties. Lamenting the stubborn impulse in the Republican Party to hold onto a glorified past when straight, white, Christian males dominated politics, he details the work of GOProud, the group he cofounded for gay conservatives. After strategizing to help the party be more inclusive, LaSalvia bailed out when GOProud was banned from the Conservative Political Action Conference. In this revealing book, he offers a behind-the-scenes look at the cultural politics of several prominent Republican figures, including presidential hopefuls Jeb Bush, Rick Perry, Donald Trump, Carly Fiorina, and Ted Cruz. He looks at the broader political landscape, from political commentator Ann Coulter to Tea Party favorite Michele Bachmann, and FOX television executive Roger Ailes. As the presidential campaign heats up, LaSalvia's book offers an interesting perspective on culture issues in politics.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
