Gr 3-6-The focus in each volume is on the ingenuity of the subject and the individual's drive to overcome often difficult circumstances: C.J. Walker providing support for her daughter despite poverty, Milton Hershey enduring multiple failed business startups. Sidebars break up and complement the texts. For example, Walker includes an intriguing paragraph on an early mentor, hair product pioneer Annie Malone, while Vanderbilt addresses "What is a Robber Baron?" Photographs and other illustrations are plentiful and well documented. Even with the earlier historical figures (Whitney), stock images add flavor to the life and times. Additionally, the writing is straightforward but not oversimplified.
