Gr 6 Up-"Tangled History" takes a narrative nonfiction approach to exploring important people and events in U.S. history from various viewpoints. Each chapter tells a piece of the story by rotating through the perspectives of those who were there; this helps immerse readers in the historical events and put themselves in the place of those who experienced it. The page layouts are highly appealing, with full-color photographs and bright graphics for captions and different sections. Each book includes a time line, glossary, critical thinking questions, places for further reading, and an index, making these titles useful for research as well as personal reading. At over 100 pages, these sophisticated titles are longer than most hi-lo nonfiction. VERDICT Written at a third grade reading level and appropriate for struggling middle and high school readers, these superior nonfiction titles stand out with their attention to detail and captivating narratives.
